One in five adults in the province struggle to read and write, and many are too embarrassed to admit it.
But there is a place where they can get help.
Valerie Higgins is a tutor with Laubach Literacy New Brunswick
“It’s how that person changes. Knowing that they can read, and knowing that can learn and accepting that, you see them change from inside, and that is what is exciting to watch.”
Literacy can help them to grow in their workplace, at home and with their family.
“If people at home aren’t interested in books, or can’t read or can’t read a notice from school, what is going to happen? There is jut nothing there to develop that love of reading, so that is what we are trying to do, the adult side of it, because that is really important too. When you read to your child, they may sit down with you and take their books and say their want to do something too. So you see their lives evolving,” Higgins says.
Laubach Literacy New Brunswick also helps people with math and life skills as well.
“We want to change their lives, that’s our mandate, to empower them and enhance their lives through literacy. If we can do that, then that is fabulous,” Higgins says.
