Four names have been added to the RCMP cenotaph in Regina this year, including a New Brunswick Mountie.
Const. Leo Tyler Francis died in the line of duty more than 23 years ago.
Francis was pinned between a police car and RCMP motor home in Oromocto during Pioneer Days on July 5, 1996.
Also being added are Sgt. Donald Forbes of Saskatchewan, Const. Gerald Fortis of British Columbia, and Supt. Dennis Edward Massey of Alberta.
During the RCMP national memorial service on Sunday, RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki said the sacrifices of the four members — and those before them — will be forgotten.
“All of the fallen members pursued a noble goal to serve their community, to strengthen it, and to maintain the peace, and in doing so, they gave their lives,” said Lucki.
In addition to the cenotaph at RCMP Depot, the four members have been added to the honour roll book and memorial wall.
“While we mourn today, we should take the time to celebrate the lives of the fallen and to remember their accomplishments because every single person represented on our memorial wall has a story.”
A total of 243 fallen members have now been honoured since the creation of the North-West Mounted Police in 1873.
