Deputy Mayor Brad Henderson has been elected the next mayor in the town of Saint Andrews.
Unofficial results show Henderson received 719 votes while incumbent Doug Naish had 200 votes.
In an interview, Henderson says he is thankful considering voter turnout being the highest it has ever been in 25 years.
“The fact that so many people have entrusted me to guide the municipal council over the next four years, it means a lot to me,” said Henderson. “I’m just thankful all the way around.”
Henderson tipped his hat to Naish, thanking him for the work he accomplished in his term and getting the chance to work together.
Additionally, he thanked his wife and kids for their support.
Henderson says his top priority as mayor is housing, despite calling it “the hardest time” to make significant change with the rising cost of construction.
That makes it harder for residents in the community to establish themselves.
“We have to be active and figure out solutions,” said Henderson. “We need to do something.”
Henderson was first elected to council six months before becoming deputy mayor in 2016.
There were 16 candidates for the town’s six council seats, including four incumbents.
Kate Akagi and Kurt Gumushel were elected for another term. They will be joined by Steve Neil, Lee Heenan, Marc Blanchard, and James Hirtle.
Incumbent councillors Edie Bishop and Guy Groulx were defeated.
Voter turnout in Saint Andrews was 63.82 per cent, above the provincial turnout of 30.35 per cent.
