Saint John is planning for more than $63 million worth of capital projects next year.
Council’s finance committee unanimously approved the 2026 capital budgets last week.
That includes $43.6 million in general fund projects and nearly $19.4 million for utility fund projects.
Members heard that about 40 per cent of the funding is expected to come from other levels of government.
The city also plans to borrow around $9 million, with the rest coming from capital reserves and its general budgets.
Here is a look at some of the major projects being planned for 2026:
- $2.44 million to purchase two new transit buses and replace several shelters
- $2.36 million for upgrades at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre ahead of the 2029 Canada Summer Games
- $2 million for a new roundabout at Loch Lomond Road and the Airport Arterial
- $1.83 million to extend Harbour Passage along Riverview Drive
- $1.73 million to support design services for raising the Courtenay Bay Causeway for flood prevention
- $1.5 million for Phase 1 of the Howes Lake landfill closure
- $1.36 million for Phase 2 of upgrades at Rainbow Park
- $1 million to purchase four new sidewalk plows
- $1 million toward the replacement of an existing fire ladder truck
More than $13.6 million is being earmarked for road reconstruction projects throughout the city.
That includes work on Charlotte Street (Broad to Vulcan; Queen Square North to Princess), Lansdowne Avenue (Visart to Pugsley), Rope Walk Road (Somerset to intersection) and Canterbury Street (Duke to Queen).
The budgets must still formally be approved by council later this year as part of the overall budget process.
