Healing walks are planned in Saint John and Saint Andrews to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
It’s a day that honours children who were taken from their families and forced to attend residential schools.
The City of Saint John said its walk will take place on Tuesday at Rockwood Park, beginning at 1 p.m. on the Trans Canada Trail.
The city added that the event will be led by Indigenous organizers and is meant as a chance for reflection and solidarity. Participants are encouraged to wear orange and bring a hand drum if they have one.
The city noted the first Healing Walk in Saint John was held in 2021, when more than 1,500 people marched through Rockwood Park. That event was organized by the now‑retired Indigenous groups Eastern Circle and Heart of Saint John.
At the time, their leaders described the walk as a step toward healing and urged governments to fully implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
The Commission has confirmed more than 3,200 deaths of children at residential schools, though incomplete records mean the true number is believed to be much higher.
In Saint Andrews, a walk is planned for Indian Point Park from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Organizers said the event will include a smudge, a silent walk around the point, and a moment of reflection. Goodwill donations will be collected for the Truth and Reconciliation Fund.
Both events are free, open to the public, and will go ahead rain or shine.
