Volunteers spent days filling sandbags in southern New Brunswick and now that floodwaters have receded homeowners and business owners are likely wondering what to do them.
The provincial department of Environment and Local Government is encouraging people to get rid of them through pickups or at their regional landfills though if you can’t do this you can dispose of them as part of the flood-related debris.
You’re not allowed to empty bags into or within 30 metres of any watercourse or regulated wetland.
If the sandbags are contaminated, by oil, for instance, you’re advised to contact one of the department’s regional offices.
For questions about where to find remediation sites or proper disposal of things damaged by flood get in touch with a regional office of the Department of Environment and local government.
