Starting immediately, Canadian families accessing the Canada Child Benefit are getting a slight increase in their payments.
The federal government indexed the payments to the cost living, which means in the upcoming year, the maximum benefit per child under six years of age is $6,496 – up eight dollars per month, for a total increase of $96.
Meanwhile, the maximum benefit for children between six and 17 years old hits $5,481 – that marks an increase of 81 dollars per year, or $6.75 per month.
When the CCB was initially launched back in 2016, there were no plans to increase the payments until after the 2019 election.
However, in an economic update last fall, the Trudeau government said the benefit would be tied to the cost of living, effective July of this year.
