Free haircuts, health checks and tax help will be available at the first Community Free Fair in Saint John, all provided by volunteers.
The event takes place on August 16 from 12 to 4 p.m. at Queen Square, organized by the Saint John Community Coalition.
It draws inspiration from earlier pop-up initiatives, which mainly focused on clothing and goods.
Brandon Flynn, an organizer with the coalition, said the fair is a response to growing isolation and economic hardship, especially since COVID-19.
He explained that rising costs for food, rent and daily essentials have made life more difficult for many, and emphasized that community resilience begins by reconnecting with the people around us.
“It’s important that people know their neighbours,” Flynn said.
“We’re not always going to be rescued by some outside force. Very often, we’re all we have — but we’re all we need.”
Unlike the earlier similar events the organization has held, which focused mainly on physical goods, the fair will offer a wider range of practical services and social experiences.
Visitors will be able to access free medical support, wound care from Avenue B, help with personal taxes, food, clothing, and small appliance repairs.
A salon station will offer haircuts and nail care, and there will be interactive art, music, games, a kids’ corner, and a mini library.
Flynn said planning the event has given him a deeper personal sense of connection, not just with the wider community, but with fellow organizers.
“This isn’t our full-time job,” he said.
“Everyone’s doing this on their own time, and that’s what makes it feel meaningful. We’re planting the seeds of a stronger community, not just putting on a one-day event.”
He also stressed that none of the service providers are being paid.
The people offering health care, tax assistance and other services are doing so without any financial incentive.
Organizers say interest from volunteers continues to grow, and that the fair reflects a wider push toward grassroots support across Saint John.
